September 18, 2009The Week Three ArkansasVarsity.com Game of the Week will feature two teams who have been struggling in the first two weeks.
These two teams both had a lot of preseason hype, and are expected to do some big things in their respective classifications, but both have ran into some road blocks, and are in desperate need of their first win.
This week's match up will be between the #10 ranked Class 6A Pine Bluff Zebras and the # 9 ranked Class 4A Warren Lumberjacks.
The Zebras fell last week to West Memphis by a score of 42-34, while Warren went down hard at the hands of Monticello 62-32.
As stated, both teams are looking for their first win before heading into conference play next week.
The Zebras will host this game which will kickoff at 7:00 PM.
The Zebras will be led by star quarterback Claude Johnson. Johnson earned All State honors after passing for nearly 2800 yards in his junior season, to include a 267 yard performance against Class 7A Ft Smith Northside in week one.
Johnson will be helped in the backfield by junior tailback Jawahn Hunt, senior Tavaurus Evans and junior Robert Jones, who all host 4.4-4.6 speed.
Two big play makers for the Zebras will be wide receivers Jonathan Frazier and Kelsey Collins. Frazier hosts 4.5 speed while Collins amazed onlookers at the South West Elite combine with his laser timed 4.29 forty yard dash. Collins also earned All State honors last season with his receiving skills, as well as his kick return ability, to include a 99 yard return against Lake Hamilton. Both Frazier and Collins are getting major Division 1 interest. Junior Justin Bishop will also see playing time at receiver.
Senior Kameron Westmorland will lead the Z's in the trenches along with juniors Joseph Treadwell and Carnell Foots. Treadwell is also getting Division 1 attention.
On defense, the Z's will count on seniors Martin Montgomery and Theodis Shavers who will man the end positions. Westmoreland, Treadwell, and Serphen Vanourny should see time as well.
Robert Jones should see time at linebacker, and could also play some defensive back as well. Carnell Foots and Donterio Smith will also see time at linebacker.
Kelsey Collins will also see time on defense as well as senior Robert Thomas. Others who should see time include Darrel Broady and Jonathan Frazier.
The Lumberjacks will be led on offense by quarterback Hayden Smith who has passed for over 5000 yards in his career at Warren. Smith suffered a broken leg against Star City last season, but saw a little action in the playoffs. Smith looks to be backed up by juniors Demarkus Calbert and James Phillips.
The backfield will be led by Savian Gilbert, after star running back Courtney Haskell moved out of the district last year.
The receiving corp will be led by senior Raheim Alford, who's 4.4 speed helps him to get into the open field quick. Juniors Cody Green and Joseph Harris will see time, as well as very talented sophomore Jalen Cobb. Both Alford and Cobb hold offers from Arkansas State University.
The men down in the trenches will be led by B.J. Boswell at center. Robert Marshall and Denzell Brown should see time in the guard positions, while Jamontae Henderson, Isaac Bradley, and Jayson Sandine could see time as well.
On defense, the Jacks will be without Antonio Harding. Harding was involved in an on the field incident that led to his ejection last week against Monticello. By Arkansas Activities Association rules, any player who is ejected in a game, must also sit out the next game.
Others who will the way up front include seniors Donovan Lee, Jarvis Jackson, and Dustin Muldrew. Junior Stephon Hampton looks to be a key play maker in the trenches as well. Senior Chase Ashcraft has been moved to defensive end as well.
The linebackers are led by University of Tulsa commit Eldon Thompson. Thompson earned All Conference honors last season, and has a impressive 350 pound bench and 450 pound squat. Senior Jonathan Lee and junior Zack Butler look to see quality playing time as well.
Junior Allen Tatum looks to be a leader in the secondary for the Jacks. Tatum has already started getting some good recruiting interest as well. Te'Arbray Abraham, who transferred in from Atlanta, Georgia, looks to secure the other corner spot, while Cobb and Smith will also see time at the safety position.
Though both teams are without a win, this is still going to be a big game between two big time programs. Both will be laying it all on the line in search for that first win, and the momentum it will give them heading into conference play.
