It turned out that you didn't need a second goalie on scholarship because all those guys showed up on campus as planned, turned out to be good goalies, did not leave early (with one exception) and did not get injured for extended periods.  (Although - Blackburn missed 1/2 season in 1999-2000 after his "I stepped on a Buckeye nut while carrying a refrigerator" incident and IIRC our goalkeeping was shaky for awhile during his injury until the 3d-strnger (Scarpace) rode to the rescue.  Also Montoya missed a few games late one season with a groin/hamstring pull and Ruden got pummelled in his absence.)  So it's like saying "See, I was really smart not to waste money on insurance last year, because I never got sick and never had an accident."

BTW, I got "Michigan has never had 2 goalies on scholarship" from one of Michael's posts earlier in this thread ("The other problem is that in his 28 years, U-M has never had two goalies on full scholarships and they're not about to run Rutledge out the door"), although if I had thought a bit I would have recalled that it wasn't 100% correct.  But probably correct with respect to most of Red's tenure.
