I am really on the fence about just puttiing Rutledge in net, just because he's the scholie goalie. I know no one has shown much in net, but Rutledge has had his shot and done nothing, why do we think all of a sudden he's going to start playing better?

I guess this season is pretty much done and you have to turn your attention to next year. Let all three goalies know they are basically playing for the right to start in the playoffs and be #1 going into next year. Just keep rotating the three for the rest of the year and grade them out. One who plays the best starts the playoffs and plays as long as they are doing a good job. As long as he plays well he starts next season as #1.

I know we don't like to run people off, but let's be honest. This is big time D-I hockey, if a kid can't cut it he should probably go somewhere else to play and it should be told to hm. Let the three know that who ever seems to be bringing up the rear in competiton will probably not be invited back next season and we'll be looking for another goalie to take their place on the roster. If nothing else you see what these kids can do with a fire under their butt and how they respond to pressure.

re- Rutledge.... or many of the team, for that matter.

Outside of him being a major issue in the locker, will someone ever think of sitting him down and pointing out- 1-he was regarded a a good goalie, 2- one that should be able to go pro, 3- this play you are showing isn't really helping 2 what so ever, and 4- what do you need to improve?

Most of the team can be gone through that- just like all of us who when through school- you may have gotten somewhere on merit, but if you don't start performing, not many will be answering your resumes when graduation time comes around.  Either figure out what it going wrong, or consider your future at pretty significant risk.

At this point, only Trouba and Merril will get a pro career where this isn't going to be hurting them- and if I were a GM, I would seriously think of telling them to figure it out before asking for contract.  Don't come early.

they're not going to pull his scholly. This isn't the SEC and Red has told me as much. As long as the kid wants to be here, they will honor his scholarship. Now, will the kid want to be here? That's an entirely different story.
1/14 2:18 PM | IP: Logged

Well, pulling a scholie and having a kid not want to be here anymore...... Is there really a difference????? I think it's time Red sat them all down and said someone better step up and whoever is the worse probably won't enjoy being here anymore.

As a coach once said, "This ain't intramurals brotha".... It's time to step up or get out at this level.

I think it's just the theory that goalies are weird. Some play better when they're pushed and some play better when they're "The Guy". Rutledge hasn't had a chance to be "The Guy" outside of the first game when he was dreadful, but that could happen to anyone. He hadn't played because of the eye injury, it was his first game, etc.

Since then, he's had to look over his shoulder because Racine (or Janecyk) would come in if he didn't play well. Maybe knowing that he's going to get a few starts would take some of the pressure off. He's never really had a chance to stay in the nets and get on a roll. Yes, he blew that chance when he got shelled by State one night after he shut them down, but maybe starting a few games in a row would help. Especially if the team would buy in, work hard, and play some friggin' defense.

I've said it a couple of times: The next month and a half is virtually meaningless in the grand scheme. They're going to get a chance to salvage their season in March, so all the efforts need to be toward playing their best hockey when March rolls around. I would try anything and everything to meet that goal: Line combos, defense pairings, PP units, PK units, different strategies, and potentially giving Rutledge a few starts.

Most goalies who play for USA end up at least being decent. There have been a couple that have flamed out in the NCAA, but most of them have been somewhat capable. He put up pretty good numbers for the NTDP and they play a lot of high-end competition. Theoretically he's your most talented guy. They need to find out if there's any chance he can be a goalie on this level and I don't think getting shelled every 5 games is going to 100% give you an answer.

I made the comment on here last week that currently Janecyk was the guy most likely to meet Red's objective of not giving up soft goals, but the 4th goal he gave up on Saturday night --- GGAAAAAGGGHHH.

Sadly the streak is over.  Two decades of work, 22 teams blood, sweat, and tears, swept away by a team that just can't seem to find their way.  It would be one thing if the team were at least competitive, but the thing that stands out the most is that this team has just seemed to quit.  Maybe that's unfair and maybe it's inaccurate, but from the outside looking in (read, from what we see on the ice), This team has been mauled at home for four straight games, including the exhibition game against the US-NTDP.  They are talented, but they are still essentially a high school team and even they schooled this Michigan squad.

Got no answer for the goalies, I don't think anyone does.  Janecyk doesn't look like the same player he had been in a couple of earlier games.  He was looking at least steady, wasn't going to be a world beater, but he had a decent GAA and seemed to be holding teams to at least numbers that Michigan could out score (read 2 or less). Since playing more that has all gone out the window as the GAA has gone up and frankly some of the goals he has given up were very stoppable.  Just a day late and a dollar short.  Racine, can't figure him out at all.  He seems a bit slow at times, other times he makes a play, and other times he lets in a goal that you just say "HUH".  Rutledge, a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma (yea, I know WWII quotes and s**t).  Anyway, I know the argument about giving him the job and after this weekend maybe that's the way to go, but I just can't get past the downside to just giving a guy the job without any competition guiding things (not that that has seemed to make a bit of difference so far this year).  My main worry of that is just that if the players even sense that the coaches have given up on the season, they lose the team, and then where do we go from there?

The offense has been a huge disappointment.  Where are the Seniors on this team?  Treais and Moffie both have letters on their jerseys and they have either been invisible (Treais) or a complete disaster (Moffie, I just don't see what people see in him, at least this year, he has been just awful - turnovers, lost battles, you name it, he has failed).  Lynch was one that everyone hoped would one day put it together for an entire season and not just the playoffs and it looks like this year he won't get his playoff chance.  He battles hard and that would be OK if he was a fourth line guy, but he's a Senior and they need so much more out of him this year.  Sparks, what can you say, this season is like every season for him.  Great wheels, flashes of talent, but no consistency at all.  Rohrkemper is what he is, he's played some solid hockey and he 's tried hard when being put in positions he's not used to, but well, he has been out of position the last couple of games. Of all the Seniors he's probably been the one that has been most where he was expected to be.

The Juniors haven't been much better, but there are some reasons there.  Merrill has only been really back for two weeks and he is getting better.   He barely saw the ice against the NTDP, he was extremely hesitant against Bowling Green, shying away from contact under most circumstances, was still a little hesitant against Alaska, but not as much.  He has a way of getting the outlet pass out of the zone, without making it look like the most difficult thing in the world.  I fully understand the hesitancy after his injury, it's not just being physically OK'd to play, it's getting past the mental stuff that goes with an injury like that.  He's getting over it, but it's going to take a few weeks.

Moffatt has been a huge disappointment.  I thought he would break out this year and finally start putting some pucks in the net, but that certainly hasn't happened.  He's been working pretty hard, but has little to show for it and has had some games where he has been utterly off.

DeBlois is exactly what I expected him to be, he is a great penalty killer and he battles hard on the ice.  I have never looked to him to be a scorer.

Clare, I'm just not sure.  I expected him to be a solid D-man after how he finished last year and at times he was looking like that.  Nothing flashy, just solid, but he's been hurt and out the lineup since November or something so it's hard to tell what's really going on there.

Bennett was probably the best player for the first month, at least on the D side of the puck, but even he has fallen off since November.  I can't tell if it's him or if he's torn between trying to do more and not stepping on the "C"s toes.

The sophomores are a more mixed lot.  Chiasson seems to have gotten better, but he was a third pairing D-man from the get go.  I wasn't and am not expecting him to be a world beater, just don't give up the puck in bad situations - just play D. Serville seemed to be playing OK, but here is another guy missing games from injury, just as he seems to get going he gets hurt again and is out of the lineup.  I like the potential and as a sophomore I wasn't expecting him to be the leader on D or anything, just do the job and don't make mistakes.

PDG, add him to the list of guys who have been sorely under performing.  His confidence seems to be completely gone.  He looks to pass first, pass second, and shoot third, and when he does decide to shoot he has waited to long and the goalie is in excellent position to make the stop.

Hyman is a battler, that's for sure.  He does so many things on the ice, pretty much everything but score.  If he could get that part of his game going it would be a boost, but again sophomore, not expected to lead the team here, but a few more goals would be really nice.

Sinelli, doesn't see the ice often, but when he does he is a ball of energy.  He is probably never going to be a scoring threat, but when he's out there he is driving the other side nuts.  He's one of those guys that seems to be everywhere all at once.

Lynch (Travis) is a solid player.  Not going to light the lamp a lot, but he is a solid grinder type guy who plays his role to perfection.  Throw in a goal every now and then and it would be even better, but even he has missed some really great chances.

Szuma is one of those guys that hadn't seen much ice time, but circumstances have forced him to take a bigger role.  He was a little shaky to start with, but the more he plays the better he gets.  He's not going to be Merrill or Trouba, but he's playing solid D for a guy that wasn't called on to much before this season.

Guptill, I just don't know about the Guppie.  Sometimes he plays very hard, this past weekend he looked like he should have been benched, again.  His effort has been lacking, especially on Saturday for a recent example.  Just can't figure the guy out.

I have seen the best out of the freshmen, goalies out of the equation, I've already talked about them.  Trouba is a beast and you can tell he gets frustrated from some of the calls.  Example is Saturday night, he is off his skates, jumping up to knock a puck down, an Alaska skater skates into him and his elbow contacts his head coming down.  Trouba gets called for an elbow to the head.  What's he supposed to do?  Shorter guy skates into me, I'm up in the air, when I come down my elbow makes contact with this helmet.  There is no intent, it's hardly a knock out blow, but now i'm in the box.  I fully understand the desire to protect these players from concussion, but I think it has reached the point of absurdity with some of these incidental contact to the head penalties.  Anyway, he's a solid player, still young and making a mistake here and there, but he's having a pretty damn good season for a freshman.

Selman has been up and down.  I like his work ethic and all, but sometimes he can be a bit off.  Well actually he plays like a freshman so how can you complain to much.  I really like Nieves, he has hockey smarts.  He anticipates plays, knows where the puck is going to be, not just where it is.  He isn't always getting rewarded for the work he puts in, but he keeps working.  Same could be said for Copp.  Probably not going to be a big scorer, but he will knock in his share of goals, but he has size, he creates plays and he disrupts the other team.  Besides I'm a softie for the local kids.  I like to see them make the Michigan team and I like to see them do well.

All of that boils down to I don't know what.  Treais, Moffatt, Sparks, Lynch (Kevin), PDG, Guptill, these are the guys who should be leading this team on the score sheet.  None of them are, well Treais leads the team in points, but he is nowhere near where I think everyone expected him to be and most of what he did was in October and early November before the real meat of the CCHA schedule kicked in.  None of the other guys are even in the conversation when it comes to goal scoring.

I guess I have two real fears for this team. First, that the freshmen collectively get broken by this season.  I hope they can survive and become the nucleus of a team tested by adversity (I know cliche) and use that to lead the next three years of teams.  To be battle hardened and ready for everything that comes their way.

Second, that because of this season, a bunch of players unexpectedly decide to leave.  Nobody on this team has done anything that should make them think they are ready for the NHL, but the lockout is over, a new CBA is in effect and a season like this could push a player who might otherwise not consider leaving to just get out of dodge while the getting is good, maybe not to the NHL, but the OHL is always there and it's not like we haven't seen players decide to go that route in the past.

The bottom line, since this part was supposed to be about the forwards, is that a lot of guys aren't doing what they were expected to do and it doesn't look like they will for this season.  Will it carry forward, at least for those players that come back, who knows, let's hope not.  This is difficult, I haven't seen a Michigan team like this for 30+ years and I guess I never thought I would see one as long as Red was here, but here we are.  Murphy's law has finally caught up.  Let's hope it's a one season thing and done, but what happens the remainder of this season, and in the off season could set the tone for the next decade of Michigan hockey (sorry, not trying to be overly dramatic).

I don't agree with playing Rutledge over Racine and Janecyk simply because he's the scholarship goalie.  That's like saying Red should have been playing Milne over the other walk-ons because he was on scholarship, too.  Red doesn't just hand out playing time--you have to earn it.  Heck, he benched Guptill for a weekend last month because he said he didn't like the way he practiced all week.

Rutledge hasn't had as many starts as Racine, but he hasn't done anything game-wise to earn them, either.  I would think, given our goaltending situation, when he is given a chance he would step up to the plate and show why he should be starting more often.  Instead, he ends up doing just the opposite.  In his five starts he's given up 5, 4, 1, 7, and 5 goals (not to mention another 5 goals against the NTDP).  Red's going to play the players he feels gives the team the best chance to win.  I know this season is at a loss right now, but the boys are still going out there trying their best to turn things around, and I don't think it would be fair to he rest of the team to be forced to play with the goalie who is struggling most simply because he's on scholarship.

As for that scholarship, I agree with Red in honoring it.  Look at what's going on with football this past week with Tuberville yanking scholarships of Cincy recruits (without telling them, no less) and a USC recruit and I'm sure there'll be more.  Pulling a scholarship because the kid is underperforming sets a dangerous precedent, IMO.  It can cause a lot more damage in the recruiting world than good.  On top of that, why are we only targeting Rutledge when there's about 15 other players on scholarship underperforming this season?

I still think it's important to keep Rutledge around for another year and see if he can pull a Billy Sauer or Brendan Gibbons and turn things around.  Remember, Sauer crashed and burned his freshman and sophomore years (and most memorably got publicly hammered by T.J. Hensick for it during the NCAA tournament with his "I don't know what's going on there..." remark).  But once those guys graduated and new leadership took over (Porter/Kolarik) and the whole team attitude seemed to change (IIRC, Kolarik made remarks about lack of team unity off the ice), Sauer's game improved dramatically, to the point he was setting U-M records.  Even his senior year, though the team couldn't score worth a lick in front of him, Sauer wasn't necessarily playing bad (he still put up good numbers despite not winning).

Remember, there's no new goalie help coming in next fall, so if you force him out, you're still left with Racine and Janecyk, and neither of them have proven to be a #1 goalie, either.  I think Mike said in another thread that the talent is still there with Rutledge, but his confidence is shot.  Maybe he's just not ready to handle the D-I level this year (IIRC, he also had a setback prior to the season with eye surgery or something...not sure if that has had an effect on his play).  I don't think putting Jared out there giving up five goals a game is going to help him.  Not every goalie is ready to step in as a true freshman, even though we've always kind of made that the norm at Michigan.  Perhaps benching him and giving him more practice time and hitting the reset button over the summer would better serve him, and hopefully he can rediscover that talent he showed while with the NTDP.

I don't think you play him because he's the scholarship goalie. I think you play him because he's, at least theoretically, the most talented goalie. You brought him in to be the starter, he's been terrible, but he's only played back-to-back games what? One time this year? Maybe he needs to get in a groove.

Do you give a guy more playing time if he hasn't earned it? Not typically, but it's not like the other guys have earned the job either. You'd have problems in the room if one of the goalies was playing well and they put in Rutledge because he was the scholarship guy, but I don't think anyone could really fault them for saying "Okay, this season has gone terribly. Rutledge was going to be the starter. It didn't work out in the early going, but nothing we've tried has worked. We're going to give him another chance and see if he can play like the guy we thought we were getting."

You have a point about "Giving up 5 goals a game isn't going to help him", and that's where they have to weigh the kid's psyche and use some information about him that the coaches should be aware of that the public doesn't have. I could see shutting him down for the year and rebooting next year with hopefully a clean slate, but I could also see playing him if you think he can give you anything.

I'm a fan of experimenting over the next 10-12 games so that by the time the tournament rolls around, hopefully they're playing their best hockey. They have not killed the tournament streak yet. Even if they lose the next 12 they're going to have a shot to win their way in. The goal should be to do whatever they have to do to be playing their best hockey in 6 weeks' time.

Rutledge has been awful, but he's also got a track record of success against quality competition. If there's one guy out of the three that's capable of getting hot, it's probably him, don't you think?

1/15 12:40 PM | IP: Logged

I agree Packer and why I suggested you just keep playing all 3 goalies and go with who's playing the best come playoff time. Sit them all down and say look your each getting 4 more starts this season. I'm waiting for one of you to step up and become the goalie we want and need right now. After the season I am going to determine, by your play, who is going to be our playoff goalie and that is who we are going to ride for as long as we can. You do well in the playoffs and your our #1 going into next year.

I think this approach gives all 3 guys the chance to step up and be that guy. It shows the rest of the team that competition is still in place and you expect everyone to work hard and you'll find out who is your best goalie. The team will definitely know after the next 12 games and I suspect one of them will step up and shine brighter then the rest. You hope then your team rallies around him and you can have a successful run in the playoffs.

But, up to now no one has taken charged and IMO doesn't deserve to be called the guy. All three are on the team, because you have had some confidence/faith in all of them. Time to man up and step up and let them know they are all on equal footing now, but after 12 games it will be shaken out so make the best of your next 4 chances while you have it. To me it's a little bit of a reset button for all 3 guys.

I know we aren't in the practice of running off guys, but there comes a point where you have to do what's best for the program and if you have 3 goalies and they all suck, do you just keep all three around because your nice? To me it doesn't have to be a scholarship guy, but after another 12 games who ever is the worse of the three you basically say look your not going to play here anymore so you might want to move on. I'm not going to be able to get you anymore ice time. Heck you could pick up another walk-on if your in need of three guys and I don't see how it's going to get any worse. Maybe even find that diamond in the rough somewhere and bring him in.

I just feel like this is top tier D-I hockey and competition should always be part of the equation and if these guys need their ego stroked or some comfort level they are the man, then maybe there are in the wrong place. There is always added pressure with being a goalie and you need to learn to perform under that pressure.
1/15 1:31 PM | IP: Logged

At least IMO.  Giving each of the 3 goalies 4 starts in the next 2 months isn't going to give any of them enough PT to fix their problems or give the coaching staff enough observations to decide who is good - either for the CCHA playoffs or next season. At a minimum (unfortunately), 1 of the 3 needs to be set aside for the rest of the year and the other 2 split the weekends for the rest of the season.
1/15 5:59 PM | IP: Logged
Maybe, maybe not. They all have had at least a few starts each already. You give them each another 4 starts and I would say each one will have a minimum of 7-8 starts for the entrie season. I think that's a pretty good body of work to see if any of them are really worthy of being the goalie UM can count on.

4 more starts with them knowing what's on the line will also show if anyone is stepping up. At this point in time I'm not expecting a Montoya/Turco type of performance. Just one of them to make the routine saves, maybe occassionally a special save. Are they cutting down angles properly, moving well. Doing what a goalie should be doing. Find the one who gives you the best shot and move on with him and hope you can get the best one to take the next step for next year.

It has just been a long, crappy year and I think it's time for some accountability and guys to know their jobs are on the line.
