the only reason there is a Big Ten hockey conference is because of a single donor at PSU. That donor dropped $80 million on PSU to build an arena and move the team to D1. That's not going to happen at many schools any time fast. The donor money gets sucked up by football and basketball and that would be even more true at the remaining Big Ten schools.
I don't think anyone will do anything until they see how that O'Bannon lawsuit plays out and if the NCAA loses that, and quite a few people think they could, then you can probably forget about any school starting a D1 hockey program from scratch. Hockey is expensive to start and expensive to maintain.
Michigan is probably one of the few, probably Minnesota would be included, that actually make money on their hockey programs. Wisconsin might and I'm not sure of MSU, but I bet everyone else loses money.
