2013 Football Recruiting Needs: Updated Feb. 20

Michigan's 2013 recruiting needs have changed dramatically since Signing Day after earning eight commitments over the weekend, and thanks to a number of position moves TheWolverine.com has learned about. So here is an updated look at the 2013 Recruiting Game Plan ...

With scholarships currently tied up with 67 athletes in 2013, Michigan can offer 18 scholarships in this class, however, there will likely be at least three to five players that leave the program, school, etc., opening up a few more spots.

TheWolverine.com has confirmed a few position moves that will alter the recruiting approach: Jordan Paskorz from linebacker to tight end; Brennen Beyer from linebacker to rush end; Craig Roh from weakside defensive end to strongside; and Jibreel Black from weakside end to defensive tackle.

So far, U-M has landed players at:

QB: 1

RB: 1

TE: 2

OL: 4

CB: 1

S: 1

DE: 1

Though the Maize and Blue technically only have seven left to give, we believe there will be at least 10 more scholarships available, and with those 10, they need:

RB: 1
WR: 3
OL: 1
CB: 1
DT: 2
LB: 2

For now, this is what the current state of the team looks like and here is an updated comprehensive look at U-M's needs for 2013.

We've said repeatedly that we think it might be a good idea for Michigan to recruit a second quarterback in the 2013 class even with four-star Shane Morris firmly in the fold. Why? Because looking down the road to 2013 and 2014, especially, U-M will lack both bodies and enough healthy competition.

In 2013, Michigan will feature senior Devin Gardner, redshirt sophomore Russell Bellomy and freshman Shane Morris. A year later, it's Bellomy, Morris and another true freshman. And while Bellomy has reportedly impressed behind the scenes, and Morris is a once-in-a-decade talent, U-M could use the insurance of an additional quarterback, with at least one year in the system (same as Morris), competing for the starting job.

That said, the Maize and Blue have not offered another QB in the 2013 class, and at the present time, the coaching staff is not considering adding another signal-caller. That could change in the weeks and months ahead, but for now, it's Morris and Morris alone.

According to four-star commitment Wyatt Shallman, he is being recruited by Michigan to play offense, not defensive end, so we're going to put him in at fullback. The 6-3, 255-pound Shallman could be a terrific, and versatile, fullback for the Wolverines in the form of a Mike Alstott, demanding 10 carries per game.

With Shallman in the fold, U-M can focus its efforts on securing a tailback, and every indication is that four-star Ty Isaac, the nation's No. 18 overall prospect, is the running back the Maize and Blue want. But, a program can never put all of its eggs in one basket, and there are other ball carries with Michigan offers.

U-M will have depth in 2013, but beyond numbers, the Wolverines need a game-breaking, complete-package tailback. Ideally, they'd find a 6-0, 210-pound runner with 4.4 speed, an ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, lay the wood on blitzing linebackers, and of course, rush for 100 yards every week. That sounds a lot like Isaac.

Michigan's big haul over the weekend addressed needs at tight end, offensive line, cornerback and defensive line. It didn't fill the void at receiver, however. That could change in a few weeks time as both four-star Laquon Treadwell and Jaron Dukes are both thought to be favoring the Maize and Blue, and both could pledge to wear the winged helmet before spring practice commences March 17.

In signing Amara Darboh and Jehu Chesson for the 2012 class, U-M improved its talent some, but not entirely. The Maize and Blue have just six receivers slated to be eligible in 2013. Ideally, they'd have nine or 10. And of those six, only one, Jeremy Gallon, has proven himself so far.

The Wolverines need difference-makers. They need to go after the top-10 receivers in the country, and Treadwell, the No. 31 player in the 2013 class, would be a good start. Dukes, meanwhile, is seeing his stock rise, and with his 6-3, 195-pound build, is the type of talent Michigan can mold into the next big thing.

No position has seen a greater change to the status quo than tight end since Signing Day. In the past three weeks, U-M added a commitment from in-stater Khalid Hill, moved Paskorz from linebacker to tight end for his redshirt sophomore campaign, and then landed four-star Jake Butt. Michigan now has six tight ends on the roster for 2013, solving a numbers woe very quickly.

It remains to be seen, however, if the players the Wolverines have added will be the contributors offensive coordinator Al Borges wants. In his offense, tight ends would catch around 50 balls a year while providing the additional blocking needed to spring a tailback for 1,500 yards.

Michigan has done a very good job adding talents at the position, though maybe the Maize and Blue have yet to add the "total" package, so do not be surprised if they keep up after four-star Adam Breneman, knowing they don't have to have him, but can dedicate some resources to recruiting the Camp Hill, Pa., native away from hot-on-his-trail suitor Penn State.

When Michigan announced its 2012 recruiting class, the offensive line stole the show, with two four-star recruits and five-star Kyle Kalis. So what has U-M done for an encore? Potentially trumped the 2012 haul, landing four four-star offensive linemen over the weekend, including top-100 recruits Chris Fox (No. 46) and Kyle Bosch (No. 60).

All four, including Logan Tuley-Tillman (No. 109) and David Dawson (No. 199), have the versatility to play inside at guard or outside at tackle. And when you add those four to the four the Wolverines just signed, Michigan should have great competition across the entire line over the next few seasons. Re-establishing its dominance on the line of scrimmage is fundamental to U-M returning to the top of the Big Ten while putting its rivals back in their place.

The Maize and Blue aren't done along the line, though. They could use at least one more, maybe two, as they continue to add depth and competition. However, they will likely stick to just one more unless attrition opens up five more scholarships, which it is not expected to do.

Michigan returned to the scene of the crime, grabbing yet another highly-skilled athlete from Cass Tech in Detroit when it earned a verbal pledge from four-star cornerback Jourdan Lewis. The nation's No. 167 player is bigger (5-11 to 5-9) than 2012 signee Terry Richardson, and is thought to possess a higher ceiling than his former teammate.

Michigan doesn't need to be in panic mode at cornerback; the Wolverines have seven bodies now with Lewis in the fold, and could even survive an early departure at the position. But they'd like to add a second elite coverman, and are targeting five-star Kendall Fuller most prominently.

Nothing has changed at safety; with four-star Dymonte Thomas a long-time commitment already, there is no need to sign another safety, especially with U-M loaded up with seven veteran athletes at the position for 2013. However, Michigan continues to offer safeties, including five-star Su'a Cravens, so there's a chance the Wolverines aren't done.

Ranked the No. 77 player nationally, Thomas is a stud, and is a high priority for Ohio State coach Urban Meyer. Thomas continues to rebuff any advances from the first-year Buckeye boss, however, and looks true Blue.

Even with Paskorz' move to tight end and Beyer's move to weakside defensive end, Michigan isn't hurting at the linebacker position. The Wolverines will have 12 linebackers on the roster in 2012 and 10 in 2013, giving them an extra man for a three-deep. However, the position remains a priority because the talent at linebacker just isn't what it needs to be for the Maize and Blue to be a consistently great defense.

U-M's four-man haul in 2012 was a good start, and the coaching staff is high on redshirt sophomore Jake Ryan and sophomore Desmond Morgan at the SAM and WILL, respectively, but the quality of the linebacker corps overall, especially among the second-stringers, is a concern. Thus, look for the Wolverines to sign at least two difference-makers in this class.

No other position has had a greater upheaval in recent weeks, with Roh moving from one bookend to the other, Beyer coming in from linebacker and Black moving from end to tackle. What the coaches have done is balance out the line, giving them three true weakside ends in 2012, six strongside defensive ends, and seven tackles.

Michigan will add weakside end Taco Charlton to the mix in 2013 (while losing tackle Will Campbell) and should be set at rush end. Though, there is the potential of adding one more dynamic pass rusher.

At the strongside end (five-technique), U-M signed three recruits this month and bring back redshirt freshmen Chris Rock and Keith Heitzman, though all five are felxible enough to move inside to the three-technique.

The good news is that with some restructuring, U-M is recruiting from a position of strength at the two end positions and can accept another commitment (or not) from a true playmaker.

With Black now at tackle, plus the potential for U-M's five-techniques to play inside also, the Wolverines are not desperate at defensive tackle. They could, however, use another true nose, in the form of a 300-pound Ondre Pipkins type, and another mismatch three-technique (like Willie Henry may turn out to be).

Michigan's roster now includes six defensive tackles for 2013, though not a sure thing among the six. Black has the most experience of the group, but he's never played inside before, while redshirt junior Quinton Washington and redshirt sophomore Richard Ash are both being counted on this fall to step up for the Maize and Blue so that Pipkins and Henry can be brought along slowly.

With Brendan Gibbons, Will Hagerup and Matt Wile all eligible to return in 2013, U-M doesn't need to sign a kicker or punter. Wile, who will be a senior in 2014, also affords Michigan the ability to forego recruiting a specialist that year. The Wolverines may not look at bringing in a scholarship punter/kicker until 2015.
