Orange and Gators duel for LB

Homestead (Fla.) Homestead outside linebacker Darrin Kitchens has offers from the likes of Michigan, Florida, and Florida State. There is also another school from the north that Kitchens is also interested in and that is Syracuse.

"Syracuse offered me during the season, I would probably say October," Kitchens said. "When it came I was happy to have the offer, but I really was not into Syracuse at first."

Now after sometime to read up on Syracuse Kitchens has had a change of heart about the Orange. What made him rethink Syracuse?

"The fact that they are starting to rebuild the program and they are starting to turn it around after one season. The coaching staff I like, I get along with all of them and they seem like real genuine and caring people. The football team has amazing people and players. The kids that are at Syracuse are great."

Those are a few reasons the three star prospect likes the Orange, but the coaches have a list of items they like as well.

"They like that I am a good athlete and I keep my grades up in the classroom. They also like the way I play on the field because I have the speed and athleticism that would make a great outside linebacker. Another reason was because of how I conduct myself of the field as a person."

With the mutual interest between the two parties growing Kitchens took a visit to Syracuse at the beginning of the month. On his visit many aspects of Syracuse impressed him, but his favorite part of the trip did not have to do with the school or football.

"My favorite part of the trip was the snow it had to be the snow. That was my first time seeing snow, it was just amazing."

On the trip there was one part about the campus that did stick out to Kitchen.

"Most big schools are big and spread out all over the city, but this school was pretty big and it had a lot of schools on campus. I liked that it was close together and the schools were not far apart."

During the visit Kitchens was hosted by Derrell Smith and they both got along well.

"My host was Derrell Smith. Derrell and I got along great, he is a great guy and he was a great host. "

Now that Kitchens has taken his visit to Syracuse he plans a few more, but he has a different purpose for looking at them than one would expect.

"Now I am just trying to take other visits and compare them because Syracuse is in my number one spot, so I am just trying to see how they compare to other schools right now."

A big offer from the Florida Gator came in earlier this week and they have shot up his list fast, but not over the Orange.

"Florida is in my number two spot and those are the main two schools that I am comparing right now. I want to see which one would be the best fit for me to go to."

All of Kitchens remaining visits will come after the New Year.

"I am going to Florida sometime in January," Kitchens stated. "I am still going to go to Michigan."

The Sunshine State prospect also has a visit set up to South Florida next month. After the visits are taken is when Kitchens will make his commitment.
