Spartans after Country Day WR

The past few years Detroit Country Day School has had some impressive pass catchers in Chris Rucker and Bennie Fowler. That trend will continue in 2011 as the Yellowjackets will have one of the best wide receivers in Michigan next fall in 6-foot-4, 195-pound Kenny Knight. SpartanMag.com spoke with the big-play wideout and go the latest on his recruitment

After a junior season in which he caught 28-passes for 561-yards (20 ypc), Knight is hearing from top programs from across the country including Michigan State. He gave Spartanmag.co a rundown the schools in contact with him.

"Michigan State, Michigan, Florida, Miami, Purdue, Cincinnati, Notre Dame, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Toledo, UConn, Syracuse, Georgia teach and Ohio State. I went to Michigan State for their junior day and I attended a Michigan game. I plan on takings several more visits this spring and summer."

How did the Junior Day at Michigan State go?
"It was amazing, Knight said. "I had a great time. They have not said anything about a scholarship yet, but they are very interested and hopefully I will hear something soon."

The Spartans have had a lot of success the past few seasons recruiting Detroit Country Day. In 2007 they landed Chris Rucker and in 2009 Bennie Fowler committed to Coach Dantonio. Knight talked about his connection with those current Spartans.

"Yes I know both of them, Knight said. I know Bennie better and I still talk to him a lot. They want me to come up there so I can make big plays. "

In addition to football, Knight is also a key member of the Detroit Co8untry Day Basketball squad. We asked him how his season is going on the hardwood.

"Basketball is going really well. We are having a great season and I am helping the team any way I can."
At 6-foot-4, Knight has the size that can cause mismatch problems. He informed us that he has been working on his speed and at the end of his junior year he clocked a 4.48 forty-yard dash.

Knight is one of those long striders that once he reaches top speed, he is nearly impossible to catch. Look for more on this class of 2011 Spartan recruiting target in the near future.

Matt Dorsey's Take:

One of the reasons why the Spartans like Knight is he is a proto-typical big wide receiver that would likely be a good fit in the Spartans pro-style offense. Michigan State likes to have a balanced offense that run a lot of play=-action and deep patterns. Having a wideout that can go up and get the ball is preferred.
