Latu likes family connection to CSU

The Colorado State coaching staff is hoping family connections play a part in the recruitment of Defensive Tackle Mo Latu to Fort Collins. Luckily for them, it sounds as if it might.

The 6-foot-2, 312-pounder from Arizona is the brother of current CSU Defensive Tackle Nuku Latu, who is in line to start at nose guard for the Rams next season. The younger Latu said he has talked about playing collegiately with his brother and it is something he is strongly considering.

"I know Colorado State pretty well since my brother goes there," Mo Latu said. "I am starting to get to know the staff members' names and I am learning about them. I like their defensive formations and the defensive line coach there is a great coach. Their head coach and coaching staff is a great coaching staff also.

"It (Nuku's presence in Fort Collins) gives them a high chance with me," Latu said. My brother has been talking to me lately about it."

Colorado State's path to the younger Latu will be lined with other potential suiters, including Arizona State, which has also offered Latu a scholarship. Latu also claimed Brigham Young University and Oregon as favorites while pointing out he will camp at USC, Notre Dame and Nebraska this summer.

"I like their exposure and their academics," Latu said.

Also contacting Latu currently are Arizona, UCLA, Georgia, Cal, Oregon State, Nebraska, Duke, UNLV and Northwestern.

Last season the All-Central Arizona selection had 23 tackles, one sack and one interception at Perry High School in Gilbert, Ariz. He holds a bench press max of 405 pounds and a squat max of 495 to go along with a 5.4 time in the 40-yard dash. While the numbers are all impressive, he said it is his intangibles that set him apart.

"I lead by example," Latu said. "I guess I have a great pursuit to the ball and I am a leader.
Run and pass. The coaches have told me the fact I have good pursuit angles and good change of speed. I guess I have a heart to not quit on a play. They said I am powerful and have good explosion off the line."

Latu said his plan is to see how offers him a scholarship and then begin to pare down his choices.
