Blythe talks in-depth about his decision
In some ways, it seemed like Austin Blythe's college choice might be an easy one, playing in Iowa City for his childhood favorite, but still it was not a decision that he made lightly. The 6-foot-3, 280-pound Blythe researched all of his options in both football and wrestling and came to the conclusion that he could not see himself being anything other than a Hawkeye. So on Monday, the offensive lineman gave his verbal commitment to head coach Kirk Ferentz during a visit to Iowa City. Blythe talks in-depth about his decision, his future at Iowa, and much more.
Q: How did everything go today? It sounds like there's some news.
BLYTHE: Yes, there is. I've been thinking since the end of last week that maybe it's time I made a decision. I was thinking to myself that I don't think I'll find a better staff, a better school, or a better tradition than the University of Iowa. I've always wanted to be a Hawkeye, so today I just pulled the trigger and I told Coach Ferentz that I was ready to decide.
Q: What was his reaction?
BLYTHE: I think he was excited to say the least. He said he was thrilled to have me come on board. I'm honored and humbled to have him say that and I can't wait to play for him. I'm looking forward to the next four or five years or whatever it will be.
Q: You mentioned always wanted to be a Hawkeye. Is this kind of a dream come true?
BLYTHE: Yeah, it is, one of my dreams anyway. My parents have always taken us to Iowa Hawkeye sporting events, especially football games, and I've just grown up around that. It just really planted a seed early and got me interested and following the program.
When Iowa offered, it was a dream come true, and it was probably just a matter of time. First, I just wanted to see all of the other schools and gather as much information as I could to make a sound decision. I think I did that and I definitely made a sound decision today and I'm very excited about it.
