Brenham Big Man eyeing CSU

At 6-foot-5 and 254 pouds, Brenham (Tex.) offensive tackle John Poehlmann blends speed and strength with a frame that has attracted college coaches to the Texas tackle.

Last season Poehlmann was named All-District in Texas and claims a 4.9 time in the 40-yard dash, as well as 430-pound squat and a 315-pound bench press. He also excels in the classroom where he sports a 3.35 grade-point average as well as a 1620 score in the SAT.

"I get after people, stay on them and I think I use my footwork and my length in the arms to get to them first," Poehlmann said.

Poehlmann holds scholarship offers from Colorado State as well as Rice. He said a number of people in his native Brenham (Tex.) vacation in Colorado and are familiar with Fort Collins. They have told him it is a very great place to live. Rice, on the other hand, offers a strong academic focus.

"Rice has pretty good academics," Poehlmann said. "They stress that it is a big deal and they said a degree from there would be worth a lot."

The list of scholarship offers for Poehlmann may be growing in the near future as Texas Christian, Texas Tech and Arkansas are all planning on visiting him in Benham this month. Poehlmann has also been to Junior Days or spring games at Texas A&M, Texas Tech, SMU and Rice.

These next two weeks of practice, a lot of coaches who have been calling are coming down to see me," he said. "I'm sure I'll talk to them about their schools and listening to their pitches."

One school getting a lot of consideration from Poehlmann is Colorado State. The Texas tackle said he is planning on visiting Fort Collins after school and before he makes his college choice in June.

"Colorado State is looking really good right now," Poehlmann said. "That is the school that is sticking out right now. I don't see distance being a problem for me at all. No matter where you go to school, you are going to have to drive anywhere and Southwest Airlines has some pretty cheap flights. I'll have to drive or fly to get home regardless. I am not worried about that.

"Basically, I am looking for a good education and great coaches who ant to win and fun coaches to be around," he said. "I would like to be somewhere in the middle where we do both."
