SpartanMag.com Recruiting News
SpartanMag.com looks at some of the news and trends that could impact Michigan State when it comes to recruiting for the class of 2011. How have some recent commitments changed the landscape? Who are some of the emerging players that are on the Michigan State recruiting radar? Find out the latest.
DB Ron Tanner talks:
As some may have seen on the Rivals.com ticker, defensive back Ron Turner of Columbis, Ohio is viewed as a strong lean to the Ohio State Buckeyes. How does this impact the Spartans?
Michigan State has offered Tanner, but make no mistake, the Spartan staff would love to add Eilar Hardy to the class of 2011. The Buckeyes have not offered Hardy as they obviously feel very good about landing Tanner.
The state of Ohio is loaded with talent for the class of 2011 and the Buckeyes need to prioritize players and make tough decision. They have obviously put Tanner above Hardy. That evaluation could end up helping Michigan State as they have been very high on Hardy since they recruited Patrick White out of Pickerington Central back in 2009.
Bennett selects Buckeyes over Wildcats
Ohio State also picked up a big commitment when Michael Bennett selected the Buckeyes over the Northewestern Wildcats.
According to the Rivals.com database that makes 5 offensive line commitments for Ohio State. SpartanMag.com has been told by several sources that Bennett will likely be used on the defense line initially and that they are still holding a spot on the offensive line for Aundrey Walker of GlenvilleHigh School.
The big question is, what position do they project Chase Ferris at? He is listed as a strong-side defensive end, but at 6-foot-6, 265-pounds, most see him either sliding down to defensive tackle or making the switch to the offensive line. Of course Ohio State could always use him as a classic blocking tight end.
At some point the Buckeyes are going to fill-up at DL and OL for teh class and then it is going to get very competitive for the players left on the board.
Ohio State rolled the dice last year on OL like Matt James and Sentreal Henderson and came up empty. Coach Tressel seems intent on locking up his "big-uglies" as early as possible. That could benefit the Spartans not only at offensive line, but defensive end as well.
Ohio State already has commitments from 3 defensiev ends if you project Farris there. Despite that, they just offered Andre Sturdivant of Glenville. Somebody is obviously going to be moving from the DE spot despite.
Word is that Ohio has close to 100 BCS level recruits for the class of 2011. That mean a lot of good prospects will be left on the board. Keep in mind, in recent years players like Javon Ringer, Greg Jones, Brandon Long, Jerel Worthy, Chris L Rucker and Johnny Adams have ended dup in Green and White due to OSU going after other prospects.
Arnett not in a hurry:
Multiple updates come out every week from teams trying to find out what the latest is on All-American wide receiver DeAnthony Arnett of Saginaw High School. The fact is that not a lot has changed, especially from the Spartan perspective.
Arnett knows exactly where he stands with Michigan State and the Spartan staff is continuing to make him a top priority for the class of 2011.
One interesting fact about Arnett's recruitment is that he does not have an offer from either Ohio State or Miami yet. That could change soon as Miami is supposed to be in Saginaw later this week. Former Spartan Coach Jeff Stoutland is recruiting Arnett for the Hurricanes. Today USC and Tennessee are supposed to be in Saginaw.
Arnett's recruitment is not a sprint, it is more of a marathon and Michigan State knows that. They are going to recruit him hard and consistent throughout the process. The Spartans will have an offer from Arnett no matter what else transpires.
Expect a decision to come possibly before the Christmas Holiday.
Valdez Showers about to blow-up:
SpartanMag.com will have much more on Valdez Showers in the near future, but we do want to share some info we came across. We recently spoke with two high-quality sources that indicated that they expect Shower's recruiting stock to increase significantly over the next 6 weeks.
Keep in mind, SpartanMag.com was the first major source to rank him as one of the states' top ten players and we currently rate him as the top defensive back in the state ahead of Delonte Hollowell. That is not a know on Hollowell as he is a solid get for the Wolverines, however in our opinion Showers has a higher ceiling due to his top end speed and his size.
It may not happen initially, be we expect Showers will contend for Rivals 250 and 4-star honors.
Vannett food for thought:
Many see tight end Nick Vannett of Ohio as a strong lean toward Ohio State. Keep in mind though, that the Buckeyes already went out of state tosighn one tight end in Jeff Heuerman of Flordia.
Keep in mind all of the Ohio State tight ends combinded did not even grab 20 passes (17). Michigan State tight ends caught over 50 (54).
That could play a roll in Vannett's recruitment. Coacaches can talk about how they are going to use a players, buit the proof is in the pudding.
