Camp Series: Wide Receivers and Tight Ends
The receiving corps is obviously a key component of an effective Spread offense attack. Rice signed 3 very good receiving prospects in February so they will have an immediate talent infusion this fall if any of those 3 is ready for instant impact.
For 2011 the Owls would like to add 2 more Wide Receivers, and possibly a Tight End depending on numbers in the limited class.
The Owls ideally looking for at least WR with size, and another with above average speed.
Rice currently has offers out to Christian Jones, Steven West (just offered), Lewis Washington. They have a long list of others to evaluate at camp though.
Kenny Bias - San Antonio Stevens
A very tall, but very thin wideout. He reportedly can fly. The Owls want to know if he is a WR or S. Also needs more of a look at his diminutive build - though he's listed at 175, reports say he could actually weigh much less. No offers yet.
Dylan Cox - Cedar Park
Cox is extremely smooth player, both on the footall field and basketball court, where he led the Timberwolves in scoring last season. That "smooth" descriptive comes from his excellent body control. What Cox needs to show at camp is that he is fast enough to create separation. He's still filling out at 6-4 and only 180, so he's not quite as thick as the Owls need as a "big" receiver to be right now. Rice coaches David Beaty and John Regan have checked out Cox at spring practices this year more than once - he will get a very hard look at Rice Camp. No offers yet.
Jaquarius Daniels - Austin Reagan
Daniels plays QB at Reagan and is very good with the ball in his hands - he ran for a lot of yards last year. Needs to verify his speed at Cedar Park Rice Camp. Projects to TE most likely. UH is also recruiting him.
Tanner Gillette - Lake Travis
Tanner is the younger brother of incoming Rice freshman Trevor Gillette. He had a very good spring at Lake Travis, catching everything thrown his way. He's a pure possession receiver at about 5-11 180. The question whether the Owls need another WR in this mold. He will get a good look at camp. No offers yet but is getting looks from a long list of teams.
Tevin Jones - Clear Creek
Jones is an interesting prospect. He's got good size at 6-1 1/2 195 pounds. His film is limited, showing some flashes but not enough to get a great read on him. He literally needs to come to camp so coaches can see more of him doing everything. Arizona has been quite interested in Jones.
Chance Nelson - Baytown Sterling
Has already visited the Rice Campus but needs to come to camp for an offer. Nelson has played RB at Sterling and is no doubt an exceptional athlete but college coaches want to see if he can catch the ball well enough to play WR. His game is speed and explosion - he needs to show it at camps to increase his offers, particularly one from the Owls.
Kevin Robertson - Northland Christian
This private school star could be a steal. He's every bit of 6-4 210 already. The question is does he run well enough to be a WR, or does he project to TE at the next level. Either way he's got the Owls attention and the stopwatch will dtermine a lot about where he plays.
Marcus Smith - San Antonio Warren
Smith is a big athlete at 6-4 208 pounds. He has a basketball background and reports a 36" vertical leap. He plans on attending the San Antonio Mini Camp so coaches want to see what he clocks in the forty. Like Robertson, the question on him is does he run fast enough to be a WR - or does he project to TE?
