Troy Athens TE picking up impressive offers

Early this spring SpartanMag.com indicated that Jake Duzey of Troy Athens High School was one of the most athletic prospects in Michigan for the class of 2011. The past few weeks the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Duzey has received some impressive scholarship offers. SpartanMag.com caught up with Duzey shortly after he attended the Michigan State Camp and has the latest.

Back in April Duzey had mainly MAC scholarship offers, but the changed during the May Evaluation period. During that time, several BCS schools stepped up and offered Duzey including Big Ten schools Purdue and Iowa.

"Iowa was my last offer, Duzey y stated. I also picked up one from Oregon so I went out there for 3-dys last week. I have 10 scholarships now. I have been to camps at Toledo, Cincinnati and Michigan State. I am going to Central Michigan and Purdue later this week. I a supposed to hear from Michigan State this week too."

As SpartanMag.com mentioned above, Duzey is a exceptional all-around athlete. We asked him how he did in the testing phase at the Spartan Camp. Michigan State's turf in the Duffy Daugherty Building is notoriously slow, but Duzey still put up an impressive time.

"One of my 40 times was 4.58," Duzey said. "I also broad jumped 9-feet, 7-inches. I am not sure what my vertical was."

Duzey worked out primarily as a tight end at the Spartan Camp, but the coaches also took a look at him on the defensive side of the ball. At the end of camp Duzey went and did some 1v1 drills against the offensive linemen. As may remember with current NFL tight end Kellen Davis, Coach Dantonio is not afraid to line a tight end up on defense and let him get after the quarterback.;

"I felt pretty good about my performance. I was not sure about the defensive end position because that was the first time I had ever played there."

With an impressive list of scholarships from Big Ten and MAC schools, Spartanmag.com asked Duzey about his timetable for making his college choice?

"I am hoping to make my decision within the next couple weeks or month."

Duzey does not have a Spartan scholarship at this point, but that could easily change in the near future. The Michigan State staff will often makes scholarship decisions after all of the camps are completed. The Spartan have another 1-Day Camp in July and several other tight end prospect are likely to be there.

One of the reasons the staff films so much of camp is so that they can compare players who attend different sessions. SpartanMag.com expects a decision on whether Duzey receives a Spartan offer to come between now and a few days after the July 12th camp.

Duzey's style of play is similar to current Spartan tight end Brian Linthicum. The junior tight end pairs with Charlie Gantt to give Michigan state arguably the best tandem of tight ends in the Big Ten. For a team like the Spartans that likes to use a lot of double tight end sets, that type of talent at the position is invaluable.
