Duzey prepares for choice
Troy Athens High School product Jake Duzey has been working hard this past off-season to prepare for his upcoming season and to impress college coaches. He has been successful at both, and now looks to make his college choice. SpartanMag.com has the latest on his recruitment.
Duzey has done things right when it comes to recruiting. He has visited schools that have shown interest, attended camps/combines and worked hard. That approach has paid off with an impressive amount of scholarships. Duzey updated us on the latest.
"I have 11 scholarship offers now, Michigan State was my latest," Duzey stated. "I had to set up a call to Coach Dantonio yesterday (Tuesday). I called him and he said they would like to offer me a scholarship."
Duzey's offer list is very impressive. He initially had solid MAC offers from schools like Western Michigan and Central Michigan. After the May evaluation period BCS teams like Purdue, Iowa and Oregon also came through with scholarships.
At 6-foot-4, 220-pounds with 4.5 speed, Duzey brings a rare combination of size and athleticism to the field. SpartanMag.com asked him if Michigan State indicated how they would like to use him if he ends up in Green and White.
"Yes, Coach Dantonio said he really likes my speed and because of that they see me as kind of an H-Back that moves around more than the usual tight end."
The Spartans like to use a lot of two tight end sets and often one tight end goes in motion or even splits out wide. Michigan State even used the tight end as a running option when Kellen Freeman-Davis was there. Duzey could certainly fill a similar role.
Last week Duzey performed well at the Michigan State Camp and that was certainly the impetus for his scholarship offer. In addition to standing out in individual position drills he tested extremely well. Duzey's 4.58 forty on the slow turf and 9'7 broad jump were some of the top results of the day.
As far as favorites and when a decision could be made, Duzey indicated the following:
"I am hoping to make my decision in a week or so," he stated. "I am not really saying what my top schools are because I haven't really cancelled anyone out."
Over the holiday weekend Duzey will certainly be putting in a lot of thought about the positives of all the schools involved. With an impressive list of offers it will certainly not be an easy choice.
In our post-camp rankings, SpartanMag.com shot Duzey up to 14th in the state of Michigan. That ranking could go slightly higher with a strong senior year. Rivals.com has him as a 3-star recruit.
SpartanMag.com will be sure to follow-up with Duzey in the near future.
Matt Dorsey's Take:
I expected Duzey would be offered shortly after camp, even after Paul Lang committed.
Lang is more of a traditional tight end, while Duzey is somewhat of a hybrid.
If the Spartans land Duzey I see them using Duzey and Lang in a similar fashion to the way Penn State used Mickey Shuler and Andrew Quarless last fall. Wisconsin did something similar with Garrett Graham and Lance Kendricks.
Getting multiple big athletes on the field provides more opportunities for match-up problems and consequently headaches for defensive coordinators.
