Dennis Smith ready for A&M
After a tough 41-32 loss to Brownwood in the Division II quarterfinals of the state 7-on-7 tournament, it would have been easy for Wimberley running back and Texas A&M commitment Dennis Smith to be a little down. Instead, he was already excited about the upcoming football season.
"It was a good run. I'm sorry it's over, but we did a lot of good things here," he said. "We've got a lot of talent and I'm looking forward to the fall. I think it's going to be a really good year."
The fall season wasn't the only thing Smith was looking forward to. He made it very clear he was ready to get to College Station on a full-time basis and put on an Aggie uniform. Playing in the shadow of A&M's famous stadium, he said, gave him an extra surge of excitement.
"It's great being up here," he said. "Just looking over there at Kyle Field, it gives me goosebumps. This is where I want to be and I feel great about it."
Even though the highly-regarded Smith put on a display during several games during the tournament in spite of dealing with cramping and a minor leg injury, he said the phones have largely been quiet since he made his commitment to Texas A&M.
"I guess they know," he said. "I have been getting a whole lot of love from other places since I committed. But that's ok; I want to be right here."
Smith said he will be attending A&M's one-day camp Sunday and hasn't considered going to other camps-or making other visits-since he committed. Instead, he's putting his focus on getting on campus as quickly as possible.
"The grades are good; I'm actually working to graduate early, so I can get up here faster," he said. "I'm already ready to be here."
