Mistakes catch up to NU

EVANSTON-It was supposed to be a special night for Northwestern.

The Wildcats were 5-0, newly ranked, and poised to go to 6-0 for the first time since 1962. A crowd of 33,847, Northwestern's highest mark since 2007, was on hand for the 12th night game in Ryan Field history. Fireworks were planned after the game.

Too bad Northwestern's special teams weren't ready for prime time. More than anything else, miscues in the kicking game and a couple ill-timed penalties cost the Wildcats a demoralizing 20-17 loss to an injury-plagued Purdue team that was a more than a touchdown underdog.
