Williams finally lands first SEC offer

Chris Vaughn told Frankie Williams a week ago that the scholarship papers were in the mail.

Williams, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound athlete/cornerback from Tampa (Robinson), Fla., believed Ole Miss' recruiting coordinator/cornerbacks coach.

Still, when the papers arrived on Thursday afternoon, Williams was downright giddy.

"It was a very exciting moment for me," Williams said.

Williams can now add Ole Miss to an offer list that includes Purdue, Minnesota, North Carolina State, Cincinnati and Eastern Michigan. The Rebels' Southeastern Conference affiliation, in addition to a very positive experience at a football camp in Oxford this past summer, gives Ole Miss a strong shot at Williams' signature.

"From the little bit I saw of it, it was real nice," Williams said of Ole Miss and Oxford. "It's a real laid-back community. I'm looking for that."

Williams, who declared no leader for his services Thursday night, said he hasn't yet scheduled any official visits. He's hoping to visit Ole Miss in November, possibly heading to Oxford for the Rebels' Egg Bowl date with arch-rival Mississippi State.

"I want to see an SEC school and see what it's like on gameday," Williams said.

Ole Miss is expected to sign several cornerbacks in February. It's one of the thinnest positions on the Ole Miss roster, and starter Jeremy McGee is a senior.

"They told me I'd have an opportunity to play," Williams said. "They said I could be the seal corner (corner on the part of the field with the most room) and that's what I'm looking to be."

Williams, who is playing both safety and cornerback this season, has 36 tackles and two pass break-ups entering tonight's district home game against Leonard.

"I'm still learning a lot," Williams said. "I get more and more comfortable as the year progresses.

Williams, who said he hopes to make a decision regarding his college future in late November or early December, spots a 2.9 core grade-point average. He is still awaiting his ACT test results.
