Hokies, recruiting rising for TE
The Hokies have started to pick up an interest in a tight end the last few weeks. The prospect has acquired other scholarships, while Virginia Tech and a pair of other ACC schools are still evaluating him as they prepare for official visits.
"A lot has happened in the last couple of days," Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha tight end Sam Collura said. "I picked up some small school offers from Ohio, Buffalo and Akron the past couple of days.
"I've also been in contact with Miami, Virginia Tech and Maryland."
Collura reflected on the three schools moving in recently.
"I kind of have been talking to Virginia Tech for a couple weeks now," he said. "They wanted my senior highlight, so I sent it out on Monday and they just got back to me today about it. They said they'd like me to come out for an official visit on the weekend of the 21st. I'm going to take an official down there to check it out. They are expected to be by my school today (Thursday). I'm pumped for that.
"In terms of Miami, they were at the school on Wednesday. They saw my junior tape and want me to come down for an official next weekend on the 14th.
"For Maryland, I talked to the wide receivers coach and I just gave them my tape. I'm expecting they'll call back soon."
The 6-foot-4, 248-pounder has visits coming to Blacksburg and Coral Gables, what intrigues him about those schools that makes him want to take the visits.
"Miami is just the fact they are switching to a pro-style offense," he said. "They need a blocking tight end and not even just a blocking tight end, but a well-balanced tight end and I pride myself on that. I can run block and still go out to catch the pass. Plus, most of their staff is from Temple. They are great guys and Coach Golden is a great coach. I should know about an offer from Miami in a couple days.
"With Virginia Tech, Coach Hite said they don't have a spot right now, but want me to come on the visit to check it out and with the way it may work out, I'll know by my visit if I'm walking away with an offer.
"I like Coach Hite and Coach Beamer. He's a legendary coach and there is a lot of history with that school. I know they need a well-balanced tight end. Also, my teammate Michael Branthover is going there, that'd be great to be with him."
Despite plans to take visits to Miami and Tech, Collura remains a soft commitment for Pittsburgh.
"It's definitely a soft verbal, but I'm still committed to them," he said. "I'm waiting on a coaching decision. I've been committed to Pittsburgh for all this time. Right now they don't have a coach I can call, so I can't even take an official yet, but I'm trying to be safe about my options and I definitely plan to take an official there before I sign. I'm saving that last weekend for them."
Collura earned honorable mention all-metro honors as a senior this season for DeMatha.
