Salem on RBs: 'They ran hard and were productive'
EAST LANSING - Running backs coach Brad Salem was pleased with the overall performance of his running backs during the first week of the 2011.
"You try to mix them in and you try to keep them all happy," said the second-year Spartan assistant. "But the neat thing is that they all have a team attitude. I think as a group, they ran hard and were productive."
The trio of Edwin Baker, Le'Veon Bell, and Larry Caper combined for 163 yards rushing and averaged 5.83 yards per carry in the opener. Baker rushed a team-high 96 yards. Bell scored two of the team's three rushing touchdowns and Caper recorded the other.
Michigan State will face a three-man front for the first time in 2011 on Saturday against Florida Atlantic. The goals, however, remain similar.
"We want to establish the line of scrimmage just like any game," Salem said. "I think really when you look at the front, it is a different front for us but it gets back to execution, us making the strides that we need to make between Week 1 and Week 2."
