Last weekend linebacker prospect Darrien Howard of Chaminade-Julienne High School in Dayton, Ohio traveled to East Lansing to check out Michigan State University. SpartanMag.com was able to catch up with the 6-foot-2, 240-pound prospect and get some details on his recruitment.
Howard is viewed by many as one of the top prospect in Ohio for the class of 2013. He already holds a scholarship offer from the Cincinnati Bearcats and is getting high-level interest from Michigan State, Nebraska and Ohio State.
SpartanMag.com asked Howard about his thoughts on the visit to Michigan State University.
I liked it a lot", he stated. "I thought the campus was nice and I liked the football program." I like dhow they are very aggressive on both sides of the ball and that they are disciplined."
Howard was able to get a good take on just how good the Spartan defense can be on Saturday as Michigan State held Florida Atlantic University to 1 total first down on the entire day.
At 6-foot-2, 240-pounds some have speculated that Howard will grow out of the linebacker spot and end up putting a hand down in college. He informed us that he wants to stay at linebacker if he can and is working hard to keep his size in the linebacker range. We asked him if the Spartans talked about a scholarship offer.
"No they did not really talk about that," he said. I like them though; they have been recruiting me since last winter."
Chaminade-Julienne is a school the Spartans will always recruit. As many people know former Michigan State running back Javon Ringer was a standout performer for Chaminade-Julienne. That fact is not lost on the current players that attend there. Spartan Coach Harlon Barnett serves as the primary recruiter of the Chaminade-Julienne for the Spartans.
Howard is off to a solid start to his junior season, despite his team current sitting at 1-2 on the season, he has been putting up impressive numbers from his linebacker spot. In the first game of the season Howard racked up 16 tackles and recover 2 fumble sin a lost to Troy High School
With Max Bullough already as sophomore potential MIKE linebacker prospect from the class of 2013 would have an outstanding opportunity to be a 3 or even 4 years starter depending on whether they red-shirt. The Spartans have already offered Jon Reschke of Birmingham Brother Rice High School for the position and Howard could be the next player in line. It may just be a matter of him getting his junior highlight film in the hands of Head coach Mark Dantonio.
SpartanMag.com will be sure to keep in contact with Howard over the coming weeks. It is very possible the Michigan State staff will have him back on campus later this fall when the Spartans host big games versus conference rivals Michigan and Wisconsin.
