Each week of preparation holds different news items. Sometimes the headlines are depth-chart related. Other weeks see injuries as the hot-button issues. This week, FSU news delivered a shocker on Monday night.

Brandon Jenkins out for season

The Seminoles lost one of the nation's best defensive ends this week, as senior Brandon Jenkins is out for the season with an injury to his foot.

"After receiving information late in the afternoon following an MRI and a weight bearing X-Ray and also awaiting to talk to Brandon Jenkins and his mother, it was determined that Brandon will miss the 2012 season with a Lisfranc injury," head coach Jimbo Fisher said in a statement. "Brandon is not only a tremendous player, but a great person, teammate and leader that we will miss. I know he'll bounce back and recover to continue a great career."

Jenkins suffered the injury in the first half of a 69-3 win over Murray State. The severity of Jenkins' injury - that is to say whether the recovery will take anywhere from four to eight months - is not known.

Shirts burned?

Monday's press conference with coach Fisher included follow-up questions after Fisher declared true freshmen defensive ends Mario Edwards Jr. and Chris Casher would redshirt. Fisher said that it wasn't worth playing either of the two high-school standouts for a handful of reps with a defensive end corps as deep as the Seminoles'.

When news broke Monday night about Brandon Jenkins' injury, the questions were resuscitated.

After weighing the options, Fisher decided that not one, but both freshmen will play throughout the season.

"They are both going to play," Fisher said Thursday. "They are going to play throughout the season. We are going to start playing them and getting them involved in things and we are going to go with them."

McCloud to play

Starting defensive lineman Anthony McCloud (chest) will in fact play against Savannah State this week, according to coach Fisher's projection Thursday night. McCloud has been out of action since the early portion of camp when he suffered a tear to his pectoral muscle. Although there was uncertainty about McCloud's status early in the week, Fisher revealed "he'll definitely play."

Werner named ACC D-lineman of week

The good news for the Seminole defensive ends this week is that junior Bjoern Werner came away from his 5.0 tackle for loss, 4.0 sack effort against Murray State with ACC Defensive Lineman of the week honors.
