Oak Park's Kelly starts off strong

A few weeks ago Michigan State extended a scholarship offer to 2015 prospect John Kelly of Oak Park High School. This past weekend the 5-foot-11, 190-pound prospect got off to a strong start to the season by leading his team to a 25-20 victory over Orchard Lake Saint Mary's High School in the Prep Kickoff Classic. Kelly rushed for 139-yards on 16-carries in the come from behind win. Midwest Analyst Josh Helmholdt had the following to say about Kelly's performance.

"Throughout the early part of his career, Kelly has been known mostly as a defensive back prospect. He showed on Friday, however, that his abilities on offense may be worth exploring for college teams. Kelly has exceptional balance and he keeps the legs driving. Would-be tacklers were falling off the junior athlete, and he just kept plowing ahead for extra yardage."

Kelly, who is also one of the track athletes in Michigan for his class, scored what would become the game winning touchdown on Friday when he went 49-yards on a sweep to put Oak Park up by a score of 25-13. spoke with Kelly about his recruitment and his goal for the upcoming season.

"Things are going well," he said. "I am hearing the most from Michigan State, Indiana, Minnesota and Western Michigan. Our goal as a team is to win the state championship. My personal goal is to do whatever I can to help lead my team."

Kelly already holds scholarship offers from Michigan State and Western Michigan. It may not be long before he adds to that list. The Spartans offered Kelly back in August when they hosted numerous top prospects from around the state of a recruiting function that was set up by Coach Curtis Blackwell.

We spoke with Kelly about his thoughts on Michigan State University.

"It feels great to get an offer from them," he stated. "I really like the program and the coaching staff they have there. The future is definitely bright there."

Kelly is one of several Detroit are a players the Spartans are making a priority for the class of 2015. He joins area recruits Mike Weber, Josh Alabi, Jayru Campbell and Tyson Smith as holding an early scholarship offer from Coach Dantonio.

The Spartans are hoping to have Kelly on campus for several contests this fall. He informed us he is not sure if he will be in East Lansing this weekend. He will almost certainly be on campus on Sepetember 21st when Michigan State plays host to the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

Kelly and his Oak Park team will continue their quest for a state title this weekend when they travel to Southfield to plays Southfield-Lathrup High School. will be sure to keep in contact with Kelly in the coming weeks. We fully expect him to be one of the top recruits in Michigan and the Midwest for the class of 2015.
