AUBURN | Corey Grant is an exceptionally fast player, always has been an exceptionally fast player, but coaches earlier in his career weren't enthused by his agility.
They didn't think much of it, in fact.
Agility wasn't part of the equation last weekend when Grant turned an otherwise typical outside stretch play into a SportsCenter highlight. He turned the corner, defied geometry by somehow pulling away from a defensive back/ with an ideal angle and sprinted 75 yards for a go-ahead touchdown.
That's raw speed. Nobody has more than Grant.
"That was the most unbelievably fast thing I've ever seen," tight end C.J. Uzomah said. "He hit the corner and I was like
I don't even know what happened. I thought somebody had an angle, but you don't ever have an angle on him. You can't ever have an angle on him."
Success is new to Grant.
He was an outstanding player in high school, a four-star prospect who chose Alabama over Auburn after a protracted courtship with both programs? Why Alabama? He said his friends at Opelika High talked about getting away from home and starting fresh somewhere else -- and that idea intrigued him.
"Then I realized it wasn't for me," Grant said. "I really didn't fit into the system like I thought I was, like I (had been) recruited. Coming back here, I feel like I made the right choice."
