Edwards excited about new offer
Just two weeks after making his first visit to Iowa City, Class of 2015 prospect David Edwards picked up a scholarship offer from the Hawkeyes. That took place on Tuesday when the 6-foot-6, 215-pound Edwards received a visit at his school, Downers Grove North, from Iowa assistant coach Brian Ferentz.
"I visited Iowa a couple of weeks ago when they played Michigan and it ended up being the coldest game in Kinnick history, so we only stayed until about half," said Edwards. "Then today, I didn't actually know that they were even coming in, but at lunch one of my coaches told me to come downstairs because Coach Brian Ferentz was down there and he said they're going to offer."
Iowa is the sixth team to offer Edwards, joining Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Syracuse, and Vanderbilt. An option quarterback in high school, the junior likely projects at tight end, which is a position that the Hawkeyes have had a lot of success with over the years.
"I think it's a big offer," Edwards said. "Specifically because of the position they want me to play. They send a lot of tight ends to the NFL, so that's huge for me. Not that I'm expecting to play in the NFL, but they have a lot of success with them and in their system they utilize their tight ends a lot."
In addition to extending the scholarship offer on Tuesday, Brian Ferentz also spoke with Edwards about the recruiting process. As a former Division I player and now an assistant coach, Ferentz offered some advice to the Class of 2015 prospect regardless of where he eventually decides to go.
"He gave me three pretty good pieces of advice on recruiting," said Edwards. "One was get to know the coaches at practice. He said every coach will come in here and be nice to you, but you really have to go out there and see what they're like with their players. The other thing was you've got to get around the players at the school and see what they're like. Then, the third thing was don't rush into a decision. Make sure that you make the choice that best fits you."
Edwards has several family members that have played college football, including his father at Indiana. He also has a cousin, Tommy Edwards, who was a walk-on with the Hawkeyes a few years ago and most of Tommy's family graduated from the University of Iowa.
