Buffs back to work

After 10 days off for spring break, the Buffaloes returned to the practice fields on Monday afternoon. The long layoff meant some rust, but head coach Dan Hawkins feels like the team is back in the swing of things. "It was a little better than normal," Hawkins said of Monday's workout, which was conducted in shells. "I called some of these guys and talked to them over the weekend and I told them, 'We need to be ready to go on Monday'.

"It's a correct and review practice but we needed to get something out of it and I think we did. Early on in practice, it was kind of getting back to the basics. With execution we are having a few issues but we are adding more stuff. I thought our effort was really good, though."

To a casual observer at practice it might appear that Brian White has been running with the first-team offense. White and Bernard Jackson have taken the bulk of the snaps behind center this spring.

"I wouldn't really look too much into that," Coach Hawkins said in regards to the quarterback battle. "We are going to end up rotating those guys around this spring. Hopefully James Cox will get his thumb heeled up here and get some reps as well. Today, he didn't do much. That thumb is still kind of bothering him.

Even after spring ball, the coaching staff is not likely to release a depth chart.

"One thing you guys will find out about me, I always talk about contributors," Hawkins said. "Guys always want to know what the two deep is, then the first play of the game, somebody that's not on the two-deep shows up and you are going, 'Is he a starter?' Well, in that personnel group for that play he is a starter.

"So we kind of do things a little differently there. When we get into a game you are going to see four or five guys get action at running back, you are going to see four or five tight ends, you are going to see six or seven wide receivers. The whole depth chart thing to me is probably more applicable when it comes to the offensive line. Even defensively you rotate guys through there."

** The Buffs will practice Tuesday and Thursday before scrimmaging on Friday.
