Smith's story is one for the ages

The devastation of Hurricane Katrina involved more than just the physical destruction of much of southern Louisiana.

The entire social fabric of the region was ripped apart. Loved ones were lost, families were separated and entities such as churches and schools that gave the region a sense of community no longer existed.

But out of the chaos, terror and despair that followed Katrina have come stories of rebirth and opportunity that might never had occurred if not for one of the greatest natural disasters in this nation's history.

Lionel Smith was a quarterback at St. Bernard High School in St. Bernard Parish, an area to the south of New Orleans that was absolutely devastated by the storm. Smith was going to be a junior at St. Bernard, but fate had other plans for him.
