Newton still WIDE open
With the quarterback position a priority for State, they have sent out offers all over the country, with one going out to Atlanta (Ga.) Westlake field general Cameron Newton. Newton does not appear to be in any hurry to make a decision; in fact, he doesn't even appear to be in a hurry to narrow his choices. What is the holdup and does he have a timeframe?
"We are probably going to commit late, probably after the season," commented Newton's dad, Cecil. "I can't really just etch that in stone. We are going to just have to ride some things out.
"We really don't want to jump on anything. A lot of people are committing early, but I just kind of want to look over some things before we do commit. I want to talk to some of the coaches and stuff - mostly in the SEC and ACC - and it is coming along well. But we really haven't narrowed it down to a five or less yet."
While they haven't started narrowing their list, proximity to home will definitely play a role in their final decision.
"For the most part, I really don't want Cameron to go six or seven hours away from home," Newton explained. "We want to be there to support him, but there is just a wealth of opportunity on the east coast. I am not denying that Nebraska and a lot of other people are calling and doing a lot of stuff as well, but we really are just trying to concentrate on ACC, SEC, somewhere not going too far west."
