Spotlighting Harper Kamp
For fans wanting to know more about Mesa, Ariz., Mountain View high school forward Harper Kamp, the time is now.
When BT saw the 2005 Arizona Big School Player of the Year on the AAU circuit earlier this summer before he broke his right foot, Kamp showed us why Cal fans will enjoy watching this young man over the course of his career. He's polished in so many phases of the game. Kamp moves well, has an extremely solid jumper with range out to three, drives to the hoop, and knocks down the turn-around jumper in the lane routinely. Kamp also knows exactly how to draw fouls when he gets to the rim.
But while all those skills are impressive, the aspect of Kamp's game that we noticed the most was the ability to create for his teammates playing the high post. He found his low post man at least a dozen times with a variety of bounce and lob passes, putting the perfect touch on his dimes. Kamp is a player who has the fundamentals down pat, plays position defense, and like Cal forward Theo Robertson, can essentially defend anyone on the court. Kamp is a very similar player to Theo but possess more overall size, and prefers to work in the lane. Comparisons to former Stanford Cardinal Mark Madsen are not far off as he's extremely tough, smart, and versatile.
