Robertson important for Gamecocks
Even as early as July, this one is crucial for South Carolina.
Rivals100 defensive end Travian Robertson from Laurinburg, N.C., Scotland County is the most important recruit to date for the South Carolina Gamecocks in the class of 2007.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Robertson, the nation's No. 98 overall prospect, is down to South Carolina, Clemson and N.C. State. The Gamecocks have been strong with Robertson throughout most of the process, overcoming longtime leader North Carolina thanks in part to former UNC recruiting coordinator Brad Lawing becoming South Carolina's defensive line coach.
In recent weeks, however, the in-state rival Tigers have chased down the Gamecocks. Billy Napier, who is fast becoming an assistant to be reckoned with on the recruiting trail has been relentless in his pursuit of Robertson. Clemson, in need of defensive ends, has passed both in-state schools to close the gap on South Carolina.
