The off-season has been interesting so far for Mark Gottfried and the Crimson Tide who head into the 2006-2007 season with high hopes, national buzz and perhaps the best group of returning starters the program has had in years.
All that excitement didn't do much to soften the blow when he heard this morning that former star forward Chuck Davis was denied his request for a fifth year of eligibility by the NCAA.
Davis was the Tide's leading scorer when a torn ACL ended his season during the conference opener against Ole Miss.
"His appeal has been denied," Gottfried said during the SEC Basketball Teleconference. "We got that in writing this morning. We felt with the circumstances surrounding his family that we needed to apply to try to get a fifth year, and I thought it was the right thing to do. He was a graduate and for three and a half years he's done everything you're supposed to do."
