Practice No. 1: Foot infection sidelines Davis

Mike Davis, South Carolina's top rusher from a year ago with 666 yards, missed the first practice of fall camp Saturday night with a left foot infection.

Davis wore a yellow jersey throughout the workout before leaving through a side gate about 30 minutes before the end of practice.

Davis, expected to be the catalyst for USC's improved rushing game this season along with Cory Boyd, has been undergoing treatment with team physicians and is expected to miss the next couple of practices.

"Mike has a little infection in his foot that they were trying to get healed up," USC head coach Steve Spurrier said. "He'll be out for two or three days. He's in excellent shape. He just has a little sore down there that they're trying to make sure heals up before he comes out here and starts running on it. He's not in bad shape."

Davis, though, wasn't the only high-profile player who didn't participate with the rest of the team.

Syvelle Newton, in the final stages of recovery from a torn Achilles tendon, missed a mandatory team meal earlier Saturday and spent most of the practice running sprints and jogging around the field along with five players considered "overweight."
