VanBergen starts season on a tear

The buzz around Whitehall (Mich.) defensive end Ryan VanBergen started during his junior season as a low murmur. Over the winter, after his tape went out and coaches had a chance to evaluate, BCS conference schools came calling and the noise level rose. Summer camps continued to push the decibel level and now, after his first game of his senior year this past Friday, that buzz has turned into a roar.

The 6-5, 260-pound VanBergen has rare athleticism for a player his size and playing in the West Michigan Conference, which boasts strong, albeit small, schools, he is a monster. On top of that, he does not bring the prima dona mentality that some elite prospects have their senior seasons. VanBergen instead brings his hard hat and gets after it on every play, living up to the lofty expectations placed on his shoulders.
