A golden opportunity
New Kansas State head coach Ron Prince indicated Tuesday afternoon that the starting running back spot in the season opener against Illinois State was decided by "circumstance" as senior Thomas Clayton serves a one-game suspension.
Try telling that to Carlos Alsup, the injury-marred sixth-year senior, who believed his full health and a decent fall camp helped him to earn the first real start of his career for Saturday.
"This is a blessing for me," Alsup said. "I believe I earned the position. I did pretty well in camp. Hopefully on Saturday I can prove to myself and the fans that I can be that guy."
Most important, Alsup must prove it to his head coach.
"Obviously as having to adjust to circumstance, Carlos Alsup will be our starting tailback with Thomas Clayton sitting this game out," Prince said at his first-ever weekly news conference at Bramlage Coliseum. "That'll give the opportunity for Leon Patton and James Johnson to get some exposure in the game. We're looking for a positive contribution for both of those players."
