UAB brings unique set of challenges
What: UAB at Oklahoma
Where: Gaylord Family- Oklahoma Memorial Stadium (82,112), Norman, Ok.
When: September 2, 2006
Time/TV: 6:00 p.m./TBS
Series history: The two teams have never matched-up before.
Head Coach: Watson Brown is 59-65 in his 12th season with UAB, and 91-142-1 overall. Brown is the brother of Texas coach Mack Brown. Both Watson and Mack Brown have held the position of offensive coordinator at the University of Oklahoma during their coaching careers.
UAB's top offensive player: The tandem of senior offensive tackles Cornelius Rogers (6-4, 320) and Julius Wilson (6-5, 310) opened huge running lanes, last season.
The two are each expected to be all-conference performers and future draft picks.
Greatest area of strength for the UAB's offense: Run Blazers, run. UAB's running attack is solid from top to bottom. The Blazers have four senior running backs returning, including Corey White (6-2, 235), Dan Burks (6-1, 218), Marculus Elliott (5-9, 195) and Trey Cheney (5-8, 190). The four have combined for 4,464 yards and 32 touchdowns during their careers.
There's a first time for everything: For the first time since the 2001 season, the Blazers will have a new starting quarterback. It will be quarterback by committee used to replace Darrell Hackney. Hackney was the named to C-USA first-team last season, and he finished his career with 38 starts with 9,886 yards passing and 71 touchdowns. Senior Chris Williams (5-11, 205) and junior Sam Hunt (6-3, 215) will hope to live up to Hackney's standards by sharing the duties behind center.
