What wrong with the offense?

What's Wrong with the Offense

The Hokies sit at 2-0 heading into the Duke game despite what most fans would deem a couple of lackluster offensive performances. While Tech is scoring an impressive 36.5 points-per-game the offense has only been able to rack up 303 yards per game, 87th-best in the country. The question is why have the Hokies struggled. What we will take a look at today is the limitations this year's offense faces, what expectations are reasonable based on those limitations and why the team has failed to meet these realistic expectations thus far in the minds of most fans.

Sean Glennon is a first year starter with essentially no meaningful snaps under his belt. He won the starting job based mainly on his ability not to make the big mistake rather than his ability to make big plays. At this point in his career Glennon has proven that he is a relatively accurate passer with a pretty good head on his shoulders and a good grasp of the offense. He is not and will never be compared with the Vick brothers or Bryan Randall in terms of his athleticism or ability to make positive yardage out of a busted play.

The offensive line features only two returning starters; center Danny McGrath and right tackle Duane Brown. The guard positions are manned by talented but untested sophomore Ryan Shuman and true freshman Sergio Render. Left tackle Brandon Frye saw significant action last year, mostly as a back-up. The reserves are almost all untested. The starting unit is talented but have never played together. It will take time for them to gel as a unit.

Starting tight end Greg Boone, a converted quarterback, has only about of month of experience at the position though he is immensely talented and a bruiser with the ball in his hands. He will struggle early this season with his routes and blocking assignments.

With these limitations the appropriate question becomes what are the realistic expectations for this offensive unit.
