Virginia is 1-3 on the season and Duke is 0-3 so far, but the similarities between the two teams go much deeper than their disappointing won-loss records.

When the Hoos and the Devils get together this weekend, coaches Ted Roof and Al Groh may feel like they are looking across the sidelines at their own team.

"If you start looking, you look at the defense against the run, we're real similar there," Roof said Wednesday. "Total defense we're real similar, scoring defense we're real similar. Total offense and rushing offense, there's a lot of things there. The takeaways, we've both got the same number of takeaways and penalties, we're both among the least penalized teams in the conference so there is a lot of similarities between the two football teams statistically."

Roof is right on the money with his assessment. Duke has surrendered an average of 88 yards rushing, Virginia 130. Total defense is Duke 304 yards per game, Virginia 311. The two teams rank 11th and 12th in the league in scoring offense as well as rushing offense. On the flip side, both teams are in the top four in the conference in fewest penalties.

Groh took the comparisons even further when he addressed the issue this week.
