Amaker a Watt fan; Big Ten hoops notes

CHICAGO - Not many people know exactly what to expect from Boilermaker sophomore Gordon Watt in his debut season at Purdue this year.

But if anyone does, it might be Michigan coach Tommy Amaker.

The Wolverine coach presided over the Big Ten's foreign tour team this summer. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound Watt, a former transfer from Boston College, was a member of that team.

Watt averaged 13.5 points in four games on the trip overseas, also serving as one of Amaker's two team captains.

"I loved coaching Gordon. I don't know if he liked playing for me, but he I enjoyed being around him," Amaker said at the Big Ten's Media Day in Chicago Sunday. "He has a great personality; that's something we don't give enough credit for when all we talk about is talent and ability. He loves to play. The passion, the spirit and the energy he brought every day was something I really loved about him.

"You can't have enough of that. When you have a couple guys like that, boy, do you recognize the value. He provided that for our team and I know he's going to do that in West Lafayette."
