Nielsen and Hundertmark win state championship
Future Hawkeyes Tyler Nielsen and Cody Hundertmark are state champions, as the duo led Humboldt to a 27-9 victory over Clear Lake in Class 3A finale on Saturday. For the teammates, the state title is truly a dream come true.
The championship game gave Humboldt an opportunity to avenge their only loss of the season, as Clear Lake shut them out back in September, 21-0. In that game, the Wildcats were without not only Hundertmark, but also starting quarterback Spencer Ross. Having those two players back, along with a strong running game on Saturday, allowed Humboldt to come out on the winning side this time around.
In the game, Nielsen had seven tackles from his linebacker position, while Hundertmark plugged up the middle of the Clear Lake offense, which had only 76 rushing yards, and had three stops of his own. On offense, the duo played a key role in paving the way for Humboldt running back Jordan Smith, who had 227 yards rushing and three touchdowns in the game. Nielsen also caught one pass for six yards from his tight end position.
