Horns to host Nicholls State
The No. 25-ranked Texas Longhorns are looking to build depth and find an eight- or nine-man rotation that can be counted on. Enter the 0-5 Nicholls State Colonels. The last time Nicholls State took the court, it was obliterated by LSU, 96-42. Before the loss to LSU, the Colonels had dropped games to Pepperdine (98-83), Washington (102-74), Northern Iowa (68-63) and Mississippi State (90-55).
Tuesday night should provide an opportunity for some of the youngsters such as Dexter Pittman and Harrison Smith ample minutes to compete for future minutes as well as guys like J.D. Lewis and Craig Winder.
The Longhorns are coming off a 77-76 win over St. Johns in a game that showed the high ceiling potential of the Texas team, but also flashed the youth on defense as well as the inexperience closing out games.
Kevin Durant led the Longhorns with 29 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots. Durant, who averaged 25 points and 9.5 rebounds in the two games in New York City, was named the Phillips Big 12 rookie of the week for a second consecutive week.
Durant received help in the win over St. Johns from point guard D.J. Augustin. Augustin scored 17 points, dished out seven assists and recorded four steals including a steal and basket in the closing minute.
