Ducks not quacks at Verizon
November 30, 2006 - Coming into yesterday's game versus Oregon, many in the Hoya Nation might have been looking past the Ducks, as a game with Duke University in North Carolina looms Saturday, and Georgetown enjoyed a 71-57 victory at the Eugene, Oregon based institution, last year. This confidence extended not to the players and coaches mind you, but other members of Hoya Land.
As Charlie Murphy - formerly of Chappell Show fame - would say, "Not", for the Hoyas, coached by John Thompson III fell 57-50 to Ernie Kent's crew, before 8,764 fans at Washington, D.C.'s Verizon Center. The loss left G'Town 4-2, while Oregon is 6-0.
Thompson placed blame for the loss squarely on the shoulders of his team's demonstrated strength.
"I don't think it was our defense" that doomed the Hoyas, said Thompson. "I think it was our offense". Later, he added "Offense was not good. We have to figure it out. We are tentative, and we're not sure of where we are going and what we are doing".
Thompson also indicated "We missed a lot of chippies, and we got a lot of key turnovers, we can't afford to have", thereby compounding the offensive execution woes.
