Video: Kalin Lucas vs. DaShonte Riley

ORCHARD LAKE, Mich. - Kalin Lucas and DaShonte Riley have gotten to know each other quite well during their years playing for The Family.

But when Lucas and Riley shook hands before last Friday's game between Orchard Lake St. Mary's and Detroit Country Day they were about ready to take the court against each other.

One of the nation's top players in the Class of 2007, Lucas gave the home crowd a memorable performance in a 70-58 overtime victory over Detroit Country Day, which had beaten the future Spartan in each of his three years playing varsity basketball for George Porritt at Orchard Lake St. Mary's.

Getting over the hump against Country Day was impressive. But the way that Lucas helped his team past the Yellowjackets added to Lucas' growing collection of gutsy performances. Just three days removed dislocating his shoulder in practice Lucas took the floor against Country Day in considerable pain. And even though his injury had an adverse effect on his normally reliable jumper, Allen found ways to score.

Lucas was 11 of 12 from the free-throw line and did an excellent job getting his teammates involved with crisp passes in transition. Lucas played solid defense, forced turnovers, and was among St. Mary's leaders in offensive rebounds. And despite being visibly bothered by the injury he suffered on Tuesday in practice, Lucas never once shied away from physical contact.

Lucas finished his night with 22 points and six assists to go with 9 rebounds and three steals.
