A Harrowing Story


The Washington State University Cougars' men's hoop team - check that - make that the ninth-ranked Cougars, have, by nearly all admissions, been the national story in collegiate men's hoops so far this year. But there is another, sordid, side to this story and it cannot be hidden any longer because the Cougars will be going to Oregon this week. It is a tale of despair and loss and loss and, well, loss.

The state of Oregon is home to two of the Pac-10's universities and neither one of them have been mistaken as a home away from home for WSU. Wazzu head coach Tony Bennett has been a member of the Cougar coaching staff for four years and has yet to return home from Oregon with even one victory in his pocket. Six times the Cougars have played Oregon and Oregon State in Eugene and Corvallis and six times, the results have been the same - a loss.
