Augustin taking it to another level

It is easy to fly under the radar when you are on a team with college basketball's best player.

However, Texas freshman point guard D.J. Augustin has put together his own terrific freshman season for the Longhorns and the awards are starting to follow. On Sunday, Augustin was awarded by being selected to the All-Big 12 Second Team as well as being a unanimous selection to the Big 12 All-Rookie Team.

The awards are the first two in what should be a handful after various Freshman All-American Teams are announced in the coming weeks. Augustin enters post season play ranked fourth nationally in assists at 6.8, which is tops in a freshman point guard class that includes Ohio State's Mike Conley, North Carolina's Tywon Lawson and Georgia Tech's Jarvis Crittendon.

In addition to ranking near the top of college basketball in assists, Augustin is the floor leader of the fifth ranked scoring offense in college basketball. Texas is averaging 82.9 points per game headed into the Big 12 Tournament, trailing only VMI, North Carolina, Eastern Washington and Northern Arizona in the national rankings.

On the season Augustin is averaging 15.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Included in the impressive season stats is a 2/1 assist to turnover ration.
