Sophomore wide receiver Vidal Hazelton wants to become more than a starter by default.
The former five-star standout from New York is working this spring to make his own mark in the hallowed history of USC football. Spring may have to become a huge leap as Hazelton battles through USC's talented, yet youthful receiving corps.
As a true freshman, Hazelton ran for as many yards as he had receiving. Despite only having one reception last season, Hazelton's competitive drive steers his goals around any pretenses of modesty.
With his predecessors, Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith vying for placement in the NFL Draft, Hazelton is ready to make his assault on trophies in Heritage Hall.
"I just want to break records," said Hazelton. "I told Dwayne and Steve, 'my goal is to come after your records'. Touchdowns, yards receiving . . . I don't care.
"I love the competition, especially with the DBs in the locker room talking trash. I love all of that, and I love being able to come out here and show people what I've got. It's all about the competition for me."
