Newkirk injured, staying positive
MADISON, Wis. - A question mark arose when Mike Newkirk was seen on the far side of the field last Saturday at Camp Randall with a medical brace on his left leg midway through an intrasquad scrimmage.
Less than an hour later, the question had more answers as he hobbled gradually on crutches through the hallway of the McClain Center heading to the Badger locker room.
Because Newkirk has classes this semester that begin just as 6:30 a.m. practices conclude, Saturday was one of the few days the junior defensive tackle was available to the media.
"It's my leg, not my mouth," he said to reassure those who had waited to speak to him, fighting toward a couch at the opposite end of the hallway.
It was quiet for a moment before Newkirk broke the silence. "Not sure what really happened, I kind of just got rolled up on. It's not my ankle, it's my leg."
