Will Wolfe be the answer at safety?

It's been a long, winding road as we've discussed each and every position and their progress during the spring. But we've saved the most discussed and cussed position for the very end, the safety positions.

No position has been more frustrating for Sooner fans over the last two years. When the Sooners find an answer at strong safety, they've struggled to find a starter at free safety.

When Darien Williams stepped in to fill the free safety spot, OU moved starting strong safety Reggie Smith back to cornerback and struggled to find a starter at that position.

Summer workouts are just getting underway at the university of Oklahoma, but no matter how hard these players work, there may still be jobs up for grab when these players hit the practice field in August.

SoonerScoop.com Editor Carey Murdock takes a look back at the spring developments at the safety position in our last installment of spring grades.

Darien Williams - Williams sat out the entire spring after offseason knee surgery. His absence did give more time to Nic Harris and Dominique Franks at the free safety position which was great for Oklahoma's depth at that position.

Sooner coaches haven't been deterred by Williams' absence as they fully expect him to take over the starting job next fall. Williams' rehab has gone well. He's back to running around at full speed and he'll be completely ready to go when fall practices begin.

Nic Harris - Harris has struggled to find a consistent starting spot at free or strong safety, but he has settled into the starting nickel-back role after shining at that spot this spring. Harris will be the Sooners' utility man in the Sooner secondary as he backs up Williams at free safety and is still working as the No. 3 strong safety behind D.J. Wolfe and Keenan Clayton.

Harris could still battle Williams for the starting free safety slot in the spring after playing well in the secondary this spring.
