Up Close: A look into Central Michigan

What was the mood of the program the way Brian Kelly departed?

The whole Brian Kelly saga was a whirl wind of emotions and unknowns. The real struggle with Kelly began once Michigan State fired John L. Smith and Kelly was listed as a candidate for the Spartans job. Kelly denied early, but did in fact speak with the Spartans during the season.

As MSU was set to announce a new coach, Iowa State came in to play and Kelly seemed to be the top candidate for the Cyclones. Kelly spoke with ISU reps and when Iowa State announced it had a new coach, Kelly didn't deny it was him. Turns out, it wasn't. Kelly then stated he was committed to CMU and building the Chippewa program. A week later, following the MAC Championship, Kelly jumped to Cincinnati to coach the Bearcats.

Following the MAC Championship, in the press conference, QB Dan LeFevour spoke on the future of CMU football and having coach Kelly back, to which Kelly raised his water and said "Cheers". Days later, Kelly was gone and the team was crushed early on.

Some were hurt, some were angry, others were motivated to prove that it wasn't all about Kelly that made the football team what it was. That time has all passed now, but not many seem to like the name Brian Kelly around Mt. Pleasant and I feel a good portion would like to see him fail at Cincinnati, despite the great coaching job he did here.
