Veterans on defense leading the way

When the Texas Longhorns wrapped up their first scrimmage of the pre-season camp on Wednesday, co-defensive coordinator Duane Akina was in a giving mood, as he praised the play of just about every player on his side of the ball.

"I thought our front seven played really well," Akina said. "Our first secondary played well. Drew (Kelson), Marcus (Griffin) - I thought all four safeties performed well. I thought Bobino really showed up (and) was very active. You can see that all of those reps have really mattered over the last couple of years and now he's settling in as a (middle) linebacker. I thought defensively we were very base and you can just write down every name that it's in the line-up right now (as having played well)."

As far as what the staff was looking for heading into the scrimmage, Akina pointed out that it was important to find out what some of the younger players can do and Wednesday's film should provide some answers.

At this point, the defensive staff feels like they know what they've got in the majority of the upper-classmen, but he's still not sure about his young players.

"First scrimmages are evaluation scrimmages," Akina added. "Even though the so-called veterans got a lot of work, as you get closer to the opener, that's when you get a lot more concerned about playing those guys.
