Hoops Notebook: Sun Devils back to business
With the fall semester underway at Arizona State, the basketball staff is working on skill development with its full roster. Three times a week -- currently Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena -- the players work with one staff member in groups of three.
All of the incoming freshmen have been on campus for more than six weeks, with the exception of Richards Kuksiks, who arrived from his home country of Latvia prior to the start of classes this week.
This season is rare in that the Sun Devils have more scholarship players who will be eligible to participate for the first time this season than returning scholarship players. Including Eric Boateng, who sat out last season post-transfer from Duke, there are six new players expected to contribute, and only five returning scholarship players.
Three of the five returning scholarship players were freshmen last season, which means nine of the 11 scholarship players have either one year of experience on the court at the Division I level, or no experience at all. The other two players, Antwi Atuahene and Jeff Pendergraph each have two years of experience.
The Sun Devils have an aggregate of eight years of Division I experience for their 11 scholarship players. From this stat, it's very clear that coach Herb Sendek is truly building this program to his liking from the ground up.
