Special teams solid vs. FIU
New faces and rule changes made the Nittany Lion special teams units a big question mark heading into the 2007 season. Although it was hard to judge the performance of the special teams units in the 59-0 trouncing of Florida International, there were still plenty of observations to be made.
With new NCAA rules moving the tee back five yards to the 30-yard line, there were many questions about the Nittany Lions' ability to cover kickoffs. Kevin Kelly proved, for now, that he has a leg that is capable of pinning the opposition deep in its own territory.
His 10 kickoffs averaged 62.7 yards and found the end zone or goal line five times. His shortest kickoff was fielded at the 15.
The new-look kickoff coverage unit boasted an infusion of speed across the line. Outside linebackers like Navorro Bowman and Tyrell Sales provided the muscle, while young defensive backs like Cedric Jeffries and Devin Fentress supplied the unit with speed on the outside.
Walk-ons Josh Hull and Jason Ganter both recorded two stops each on coverage.
